Plastering & Skimming

What is the difference between skimming and replastering?

Skimming applies a thin new coat over a sound existing surface, while replastering removes the old plaster and applies a fresh, thicker coat. We will advise which suits your walls.

Can you skim over wallpaper or painted walls?

Painted walls can often be skimmed after preparation. Wallpaper should be removed first, as it can loosen and cause defects. We will check the surface before quoting.

What is dry lining, and do I need it?

Dry lining fixes plasterboard to walls or a frame to create a flat, stable surface. It is often used on new partitions, extensions and uneven masonry walls.

Can you plaster new extensions and renovations?

Yes. We work on extensions, loft conversions and full renovations, from boarding through to the final skim coat.

Repairs, Artex & Damp

Can you repair cracks or damaged plaster?

Yes. Cracks, blown areas and damaged plaster can usually be cut out, made good and re-skimmed so the repair blends into the surrounding wall.

Can you remove Artex from my ceilings?

Yes. Textured coatings can be skimmed over, or the ceiling can be overboarded, depending on its condition. Older Artex may contain asbestos, so it should be tested before any work begins.

Can you plaster over a damp wall?

The cause of the damp should be identified and fixed first. Once the wall is dry and sound we can replaster it, using suitable materials where needed.

The Process

How long does plastering take?

A single room can often be skimmed in a day, with more time needed for full-room replastering or larger projects. We explain the likely programme before work starts and keep you updated throughout.

Do you offer a warranty on your work?

Workmanship cover depends on the agreed specification. Any applicable cover will be stated clearly in the written quotation.

How long before I can paint new plaster?

New plaster needs time to dry and cure, often a few days up to a couple of weeks depending on conditions. We will advise on when it is ready and how to prime it.

How do I prepare my home for plastering?

We will explain access, protection and preparation before work starts. Clearing the room as far as possible helps the team work safely and efficiently.

Will the work be messy?

Plastering is a wet trade, but we protect floors and furniture, keep the working area tidy and clear up when we finish each day.

General

How much does plastering cost?
